Carl Rogers goes on to explain a few significant learnings....
1. "In my relationships with persons I have found that it dos not help, in the long run, to act as though I were something that I am not."
2. "I find I am more effective when I can listen acceptantly to myself, and can be myself."
We cannot change, we cannot move away from what we are, until we thoroughly accept what we are. Then change seems to come about almost unnoticed.
3. "I have found it of enormous value when I can permit myself to understand another person."
Our first reaction to most of the statements which we hear from other people is an immediate evaluation or judgment, rather than an understanding of it. If we were to really understand, we are putting ourselves at risk for change in which we all fear. But to understand the other permits them to change- a positive value.
4. "I have found it enriching to open channels whereby others can communicate their feelings, their private perceptual worlds, to me."
5. "I have found it highly rewarding when I can accept another person."
6. "The more I am open to the realities in me and in the other person, the less do I find myself wishing to rush in to 'fix things.'"
7. "I can trust my experience."
Sometimes feelings are more trustworthy than the intellect.
Max Weber, "In carrying on my own humble creative effort, I depend greatly upon that which I do not yet know, and upon that which I have not yet done."
8. "Evaluation by others is not a guide for me."
The judgments of others, while they are listened to, and taken into account for what they are, can never be a guide for me.
9. "Experience is, for me, the highest authority."
10. "The facts are friendly."
Don't be weary of research in fear of disproving a hypothesis. Every bit of evidence will always lead u one bit closer to the truth.
11. "What is most personal is most general."
What is most personal and unique in each one of us is probably the very elemtn which would, if it were shared or expressed, speak most deeply to others.
12. "It has been my experience that persons have a basically positive direction."
13. "Life, at its best, is a flowing, changing process in which nothing is fixed."
